How to set up a MWC - nitro

General Note:

When it comes to MWC’s, the Head TO is the guy who puts everything together. He has responsibilities and a share of the workload but he always ends up doing less work in total than the people who work on the website and deal with the more technical problems.

I have been on both positions and I know that the time I have been spending on the tournament this year is far less than what I have spent in 2k4/2k6. Just have that in mind when you need someone to point your thanks to in the future ie. at the end of this tournament.

How to set up a MWC:

Take your decision whether you want to run it or not by late February, preferably mid February.

Contact the key people

Webmaster – You will be best off using wighty’s scripts. To do that you will need to contact him for access to those scripts and also ask him to help out. The reason you will also need his help and not just the scripts is because his scripts are too advanced for anyone else in the community (although some come close to understanding them).
If wighty is unavailable he will let you use the scripts but you will need someone else to help out implement them into the site- Cave/Toxyn/Judas/Veritas are your options.

Web Design- I think toxyn is pretty active and good at coming up with designs so he should be the first person you contact. If he is unavailable you can try contacting judas or as a last resort contact me (see mwc06 design :( ). A mwc is nothing without cool myth pics so you should contact Cheeze and ask for his help.

Web Space – You can try asking wighty and if he has no more space to lend on his overloaded with mwcs site then you can contact doughie, he is always willing to help.

Sponsors – Tiger, Thor, Ducky, Jotun, Mwc04 sponsor.

Progress

Once you have assembled the people to help you with the above tasks you need to set up a temporary TO forum. You need to do this by mid march. You should contact wighty, doughie or toxyn for this one (as a last resort contact magma or playmyth to just lend you a private forum).

In the mean time you need to gather up a couple of more people you think you can trust in helping you out with the tough decisions. Throughout the years I ve found out that I was always able to rely on ducky and dantski (tox, cheese, wighty, cave and the others mentioned before included). Some others were very helpful during tfc2 but I doubt they have that much time anymore (fire). And if you can get along with paris, he is good too.

I feel that I don’t have that much time to spend anymore so if you feel the same when running a mwc you should learn to rely on people who will have the power to take critical decisions over issues without consulting you first.

In the temporary TO forum the initial website designs will be shown and discussion around progress will take place. The deadline for the design should be mid April.

Implementation of the scripts should commence right after the design is finalized and be finished by the first week of May (test the site if possible).

Before you launch the site you will need to talk to the sponsors and take the final decision regarding the prize.

Advertising

Grim can provide you with many emails to spam, and as always you can contact bungie and all those other gaming sites. At this point the workload will be quite big so you will need someone else to take care of this (that’s were those people that you trust come in).

Map Picks

You will need to come up with the map picks. Ducky/tox/dantski/grim/flat are really good at helping out with that and I think wwo is ok too (Paris proved that despite his eagerness he is not very good). Basically I think that its good to include some players who are tradition oriented (grim) with players who are more brave with their picks (ducky) and more gameplay considerate (dantski). But that’s just me. You can pick the maps yourself but that takes time as you also need to figure out scoring for each map aswell.

Set up a private forum for map discussion.

TA’s + Scorers

You will need to pick the TA writers. Whoever you decide on make sure you provide him with solid guidelines.

Make a post and ask for scoring volunteers.

Set up a private forum for scorers/volunteers.

Final advices:

As a TO you will need to avoid flaming, making biased posts and talking in myth lobbies too much about the tournament. Keep a neutral stance as much as possible.

Things to consider with every tournament:

Weighted Pools or not.
Number of TA writers
Prize money
Number of players per team
Number of teams (eg. Allow some possible forfeit teams just so you reach a higher number).
Roster changes policy

Most underrated mwc/tournament helper as far as I am concerned is Cave. He has come in to save mwc’s more times than I can remember and did an excellent job every single time. Noone mentions him anywhere that much and I think he deserves it. He is the type of person who just keeps an eye on the tournament and helps out without being asked to just so that everything runs smoothly.

People who its not so wise to depend upon:

Stonecold/Browning

They almost caused a delay in the launching of mwc04/mwc06 sites respectively- I don’t ignore the fact that they possibly did have personal issues at the time but they failed to give us some kind of warning (an email or forum post does not take more than 5mins).

ps. Anything mentioned above which did not apply to this year's tournament was due to the simple life fact that things dont always go the way you plan them.

pps. Be eager to spend time into extra things such as the recent DE1 mini tourney. I wish i had time to run parallel events with MWC's, part of a bigger competition(nothing to do with mwc ) but I dont.
